6 Vegan Options to Try at Starbucks

2015-02-06 08.48.58Now that Starbucks is stocking (Sumatran!) coconut milk, vegan coffee drinkers have even more options for that early morning java jolt. But in case you need some suggestions, here are six drinks worthy trying—tailored to match on your current mood.

If you’re feeling exotic: try the green tea frappuccino with coconut milk.
If you’re feeling seasonal: try the peppermint mocha with soy milk.
If you’re feeling hot: try the cool lime refresher.
If you’re feeling magical: try the Harry Potter-inspired butterbeer frappuccino. This is a secret menu item (veganized), so write down the recipe: grande coconut or soy milk frappuccino with three pumps of caramel syrup and three pumps of toffee nut syrup.
If you’re feeling nutty: try the hazelnut frappuccino with soy milk.
If you’re feeling cozy: try the classic hot chocolate with coconut milk.

While lots of stuff on the Starbucks menu is vegan (when the milk is subbed out), there are exceptions. Avoid light frappuccinos, anything with caramel sauce/drizzle or brulee, pumpkin spice, white mocha and whipped cream.

Also keep in mind that most baristas aren’t well versed on what is or isn’t vegan, so probably do some research in advance (this article is an awesome place to start!).

I’m confused on this though. You say that the vegan butterbeer uses caramel syrup, but then say the caramel syrup isn’t vegan.

Hi. I am vegan and work at Starbucks! The caramel drizzle is not vegan bc it contains milk and is actual caramel, the syrup (which makes the actual drink taste like caramel is just a flavored sugar syrup)

Sorry for the confusion! The caramel syrup is vegan; the caramel sauce/drizzle is not. 🙂 I’ll make that fix in the story.
